An island in the heart of the Aegean...

... that lithesome seducer Feminine with curves and hidden bays attractive and fertile Unruly and fleeting. Like Artemis, the ancient goddness and her Mistress. She floats on the blue Aegean waters. She holds the islands round her in a chain. This ring seals her essence, defines her self sufficiency. Her body a unique moment on this globe a rare example of paradise.

GENERAL

Leros is an island in the SE Aegean, one of the Dodecanese. It lies opposite the coast of Asia Minor with Patmos and Lipsi to the north and 1 nautical mile to the south Kalymnos.

Leros has an area of 53 sq. km. and a population of 8000. Its coastline is 71 km. long because of the numerous gulfs and bays which push their way into it. The most important is the bay of Lakki which is the largest on the island and one of the most secure harbors in the Mediterranean and includes complete yachting facilities.

The inhabitants of Leros are employed fishing, spong-fishing and farming. The island has a more than adequate hotel infrastructure, a good street plan and public transport which facilitates your access to various locations.

The island has year round connections to the surrounding islands and Pireus (Athens) with ferry boats and "Flying Dholphins". It also air connections with Athens and Rhodes.

The average summer temperatures are 24C-27C and winter 12C-17C.

Swimming 
   The best beaches for swimming in Leros are at Agia Marina, Alinda, Krithoni, Panteli, 
Vromolithos, Partheni (Blefoutis),Lakki (Koulouki, Merikia), Xerocambos and the bay of 
Gourna (Agios Isidoros, Kokkali and Drymonas).

Food 
   Try octapus grilled over charcoal, marinated fish with rosemary or grilled, local 
myzithra (soft cheese)and delicious pastries "pougakia" and "svigi". Sea unichs and 
bladder fish are considered to be hor-d'oeuvreson Leros; be brave! 

Entertainment 
   In Alinda, Agia Marina, Platanos, Panteli, Vromolithos and Lakki, there are restaurants,
taverns, grill shops, pastry cafes, coffe-bars and pubs. Tavernas with live music can be 
found in Panteli, Alinda and Vromolithos. Night clubs with Bouzouki are found outside Lakki 
on the road to Platanos. There are also local outdoor festivals in August where you have 
the opportunity for drinking, dancing and having a time of your life. 

Market 
   On Leros as in the rest of Dodecanese, there are imported good such as clothes, 
crystal, alcoholic beverages which cost less than the rest of Greece. Local products 
worth purchasing are pastries, cheese, honey, beverages, ceramics and silver jewellery. 
In Agia Marina there is also the famous popular art shop of P. Dekouli were you can 
find hand made jewellery, icons and also a variety of antiques and paintings.
